U.S.%20%234359%20Botticelli%26rsquo%3Bs%20Virgin%20and%20Child%20%20with%20Young%20John%20the%20Baptist%20Traditional%20Christmas%20Issue%20Date%3A%20October%2023%2C%202008%20City%3A%20New%20York%2C%20NY%20Renaissance%20artist%20Sandro%20Botticelli%20(1445-1510)%20was%20born%20in%20Florence%2C%20Italy.%26nbsp%3B%20He%20learned%20to%20paint%20as%20an%20apprentice%20to%20Fra%20Filippo%20Lippi%2C%20famous%20for%20creating%20the%20most%20beautiful%20Madonnas%20in%20Florence.%26nbsp%3B%20Botticelli%20opened%20his%20own%20workshop%20in%201470.%26nbsp%3B%20Soon%2C%20many%20of%20Florence%26rsquo%3Bs%20most%20prestigious%20families%20were%20turning%20to%20him%20for%20portraits%20and%20religious%20paintings.%26nbsp%3B%20In%201481%2C%20the%20renowned%20Florence%20painter%20was%20invited%20by%20Pope%20Sixtus%20IV%20to%20fresco%20the%20walls%20of%20the%20Sistine%20Chapel%20in%20Rome%2C%20Italy.%20The%20Madonna%20and%20Child%20With%20Angel%20shown%20on%20this%20cover%26rsquo%3Bs%20cachet%20was%20painted%20by%20Botticelli%20between%201465%20and%201467.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20tempera%20(egg%20mixed%20with%20pigment)%20on%20panel%20piece%20was%20painted%20for%20Florence%26rsquo%3Bs%20orphanage%2C%20Spedale%20degli%20Innocenti%2C%20where%20it%20remains%20today.%20The%20Madonna%20has%20been%20featured%20on%20a%20U.S.%20Christmas%20stamp%20almost%20every%20year%20since%201965.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20is%20found%20again%20in%202008%20with%20Botticelli%26rsquo%3Bs%20Virgin%20and%20Child%20with%20the%20Young%20John%20the%20Baptist.%26nbsp%3B%20Students%20may%20have%20painted%20parts%20of%20this%20masterpiece%2C%20which%20was%20created%20in%20Botticelli%26rsquo%3Bs%20large%20workshop%20around%201490.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20tempera%20and%20oil%20on%20wood%20painting%20showcases%20the%20loving%20relationship%20between%20Mother%20and%20Child.%26nbsp%3B%20Today%2C%20the%20painting%20is%20owned%20by%20the%20Cleveland%20Museum%20of%20Art.
